The "S" House, a collaborative project by Gubbins Polidura Arquitectos and MasArquitectos, offers a refined retreat nestled on the dramatic coastline between Zapallar and Papudo, approximately 150 kilometers north of Santiago, Chile. Completed in 2020, this 4521 square foot residence was conceived as a secondary home for a family with three children, seamlessly integrating with its rugged, rocky surroundings. The design emphasizes a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor living, capturing breathtaking ocean vistas while providing a sanctuary of tranquility.
The coastal location of Punta Pite, characterized by its prominent rocky outcroppings, presented both a challenge and an opportunity for the architectural teams. The objective was to create a dwelling that not only withstood the elements but also celebrated the unique natural beauty of the site. The architects focused on designing a structure that appears to emerge organically from the landscape, utilizing materials and forms that resonate with the environment.
A key aspect of the design involved maximizing natural light and ventilation throughout the home. Expansive windows and strategic openings frame the picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean, drawing the surrounding scenery into the living spaces. The interior layout is thoughtfully planned to accommodate both communal family activities and private moments of relaxation, reflecting the needs of a dynamic household.
Robust and durable materials were selected to ensure the house's longevity in the coastal climate. Concrete and glass feature prominently, contributing to a contemporary aesthetic that is both resilient and elegant. These materials not only provide structural integrity but also create a visual dialogue with the natural textures of the rocky site.
The "S" House is a testament to thoughtful design that respects its context, providing a comfortable and inspiring living environment. The project showcases how modern architecture can coexist harmoniously with nature, creating a dwelling that is both a haven and a vantage point for appreciating the stunning Chilean coast.
